Check the small print
Offers and contracts of employment usually take a fairly standard form so you should not need to be a lawyer to understand them. However, it is important to read the small print carefully to be sure that you are happy to accept all the terms and that everything promised in the verbal offer has been included. Don't be afraid to query anything that is unclear or to flag up something that has been omitted - specific contract terms may also require fine-tuning as part of the negotiation process, which can be done by speaking with your consultant.
Be professional
It is essential to your long-term career development that you always behave in a scrupulously professional manner when dealing with job offers or moving on from your current employers. Your reputation in the market place and your ability to secure good references depend on your integrity. It will reflect very badly on you if you let down your current employer before completing your notice period or if you fail to turn up for your first day at the new company because something better came along. The business community can be very close-knit and such behaviour is likely to damage your long-term prospects.
